QUICK START
============
Getting Started
- After you install Catz, you'll see a "Catz" file with a Catz silhouette icon
inside the PF.Magic Catz folder.
- Start Catz by double-clicking on the application named "Catz"
Ñ NOTE: For Catz and the Screensaver to run properly, the Catz application
must be in the same folder at the same level as the following folders and files:
- Resources (folder)
- Adopt Data (folder)
- Make Adopt (application)
- Catz Help (file)
- This will launch Catz, starting with the Catz Adoption Kit.
- You can pet and play with any of the five Catz breeds and decide
which one is best for you!
- When you decide which one you want to adopt, click the "Adopt Me Now" button.
Important Note
- Catz love to run around on your computer screen. Whenever you let a Catz
loose on the full screen, you will not be able to click on any other application
until you...
1) Put the Catz back into the playpen, or
2) Go under the Finder menu and select another application, or
3) Quit Catz.
Here are just a few of the things to look forward to after adopting:
Once you have adopted your own Catz, you will be able to feed and play with your
Catz. You will have a whole bunch of different toys to play with that your Catz will love. You will be able to groom them and change their color. You will be able to
see the CatNapz screensaver, which saves your monitor from unwanted burn-in
and gives you a glimpse at Catz' dreams. Over time, your adopted Kittenz will
grow up to be a full-sized Catz.

back into it, or...
- Click once on the empty basket and watch the Catz walk back to it.
Catz love to be petted!

TROUBLESHOOTING & KNOWN MISBEHAVIORS
========================================
--------------------------------
SCREEN SAVER - TROUBLESHOOTING
--------------------------------
"The password I entered isn't working, and I'm positive I entered it right."
- A password setting is specific to the individual Catz file that was running
when you entered your password. If you have adopted more than one Catz,
there may be different password settings for each Catz file.
The password setting is determined by the last Catz that you opened.
"I forgot my password for CatNapz - How do I get around this?"
- You can force CatNapz to quit by holding the Option and Command
keys while pressing the Esc button.
You should restart your computer after force-quitting Catz.
Then you can launch Catz again, go under the Options menu to "CatNapz
Settings", and turn off the password requirement for that Catz file.
- If you have forgotten your original password, you won't be able to change it
for that Catz file, you can only turn it off.
"Can I change my password without running Catz?"
- No. The only way to change the password setting is by launching Catz
and choosing "CatNapz Settings" under the Options menu.
"CatNapz won't launch after I've opened other applications (and Catz is closed)!"
- Try quitting other programs to free up memory.
CatNapz will only work if you have enough free MB of RAM to launch the whole
Catz application (with its "Minimum Memory" requirements).
You can see what this memory requirement is by selecting the Catz
application and under the "File" menu, choosing "Get Info."
"After I installed Catz, the system extension 'CatNapz' conflicts with 'SAM Intercept' or 'At Ease' at startup, and there is a problem."
- This problem is caused by the load sequence of these System extensions.
- Solution: The extension "CatNapz" needs to load before "SAM Intercept"
and before "At Ease."
- To make the CatNapz extension start first, rename it to "1CatNapz".
Adding the number "1" to the beginning of the name should make it load first,
since extensions load in alphabetical order.
Note: Even though you will type the number "1", it will appear as "≈" when it loads.
"The Screensaver ("CatNapz") sometimes launches when I don't expect it to."
- One possible solution to this is to take the file called "CatNapz Startup" out of
the Startup Items folder in the System folder.
Note: When you do this your screensaver may not start for the first 15 minutes
after starting up your computer, unless you run Catz before then.
"I moved my Catz application out of the folder called PF.Magic Catz, and when the
screensaver launched, my computer froze."
- For Catz and the Screensaver to run properly, the Catz application
must be in the same folder at the same level as the following folders and files:
- Resources (folder)
- Adopt Data (folder)
- Make Adopt (application)
- Catz Help (file)
If you wish to have a shortcut to Catz at a different level or on your desktop,
make an "alias" of the Catz application.

ADOPTION KIT -TROUBLESHOOTING
-------------------------------
"I'm having trouble putting Catz back into their baskets."
- Make sure your cursor hand is positioned over the basket when
you drop the Catz off.
- Or, click once on the empty basket.
"When I try to throw one of the balls, it snaps back into the Supply Shelf window when
I let go."
- You may be letting go when the cursor (hand) is near the border of,
or directly over, the Supply Shelf. Releasing a ball or any toy at that time is
actually the way to put it back in the supply shelf.
- Try releasing a ball with the hand clearly away from the supply shelf.
"Creating an Adoption Kit failed because files could not be found."
- Creating an Adoption Kit requires a folder called Adopt Data,
containing these two files:
Catz Installer
Catz Installer Part 2
- This folder gets created when you install Catz the first time.
- If you have deleted these files, or they are missing, you won't be able to
create an Adoption Kit.
-------------------------------------------------
FULL PRODUCT (AFTER ADOPTING) - TROUBLESHOOTING
-------------------------------------------------
"Catz changed from full-screen mode back to the playpen by itself."
This will happen every time if you are in full-screen mode, and:
- Launch the Online Help (by clicking on the Question Mark)
- Activate CatNapz
- Create an Adoption Kit
This is simply a fact of Catz. When you do any of the above
activities, your Catz will go back into its playpen. Click on the
Full-screen button to let your Catz back out.
"My Catz disappears from the screen."
- Like a real cat, your Catz will sometimes run off on its own errands.
- Try double-clicking the mouse to call your Catz back.
"My Catz sometimes freezes on the screen."
- Digital Catz need to behave well and make sure they don't slow down
your system. If an important application needs to control your
computer for a few seconds, your Catz will hold still until that
application lets go. It's nothing to worry about!
"How can I improve Catz performance if it runs slowly?"
Generally, a PowerPC is strongly recommended to ensure smooth performance.
You may slightly improve performance by increasing the RAM allocation for
Catz.
1. Click once on the Catz application so that it is selected, but not running.
2. Under the File Menu, select "Get Info" (or press Command+I).
3. Increase the "preferred size" to 6200 K.
4. Launch Catz. Your Catz should run more smoothly.
"I double-clicked on the file called "Catz Help" but can't open it (in the Finder)."
- If you wish to open Catz Help from the Finder (outside of Catz), you can open
the folder called "Resources," and then launch the application Microsoft Help.
It will prompt you for a file to open, and you will now be able to
find and open the Catz Help data file.
- Catz Help is the data file that gets used when you launch Help from inside of
Catz - by clicking on the Question Mark Icon in the Supply shelf window.
"I closed Help, but 'Microsoft Help' was still running"
If you use Catz Help, be sure to Quit it when you are done reading the Help.
If you just "Close" the Help window, the Help application will still be running
in the background.
"The Catz Playpen window has changed colors."
- If you change your Display resolution or color palette while Catz is
running, your Catz colors may shift undesirably. To fix this, simply
quit and relaunch Catz.
- Also, when running on a system with only 256 colors, opening or selecting
another application can sometimes cause Catz colors to change (the programs
are competing for the same colors). If your Catz turns black, changes
colors in an unexpected way, or the Playpen background colors become
distorted, try resizing the Playpen window by first shrinking it, then
enlarging it.
- If this does not work, go back and forth between full-screen and playpen
modes.
- If this does not work, close and re-open Catz and the problem should go away.
"I'm not hearing any sounds."
- To hear your Catz, your Sound Control Panel must be turned on, and the volume
setting must higher than the absolute minimum.
- You also have separate controls for sound in the General Options and in
CatNapz Options.
"Does Installing Catz affect my system files?"
- The files that come with PF.Magic Catz are as system-friendly
as possible. Check the first section of this document called
"What the Installer Does" for more information.
"When I turned on Virtual Memory, Catz really slowed down."
- In order to regain the normal performance of Catz, you will need
to turn Virtual Memory off. Since Virtual Memory decreases
the memory requirements of Catz by approximately 1.1 MB, you may
need to free up memory by shutting down other applications instead.

Don't worry - this won't hurt it. Releasing the mouse button will drop your
Catz safely to the desktop.
Catz love to be petted!
As long as you're not holding something, you can pet your Catz at any time.
To do this, simply click and hold the mouse button while moving the
cursor over the Catz. The cursor will change to a "petting hand."
Stroke the Catz with the cursor while holding down the mouse button.
If you pet your Catz just right and long enough, it might roll over to let you
scratch its stomach.
Playing with Your Catz
There are plenty of toys in the supply shelf to keep your Catz busy:
- Use the paint brush to color your Catz.
- Use the spray bottle to discipline your Catz.
- Use the flea spray to relieve your Catz of itchy fleas.
- Treat your Catz to Catnip for a groovy change of pace.
- Play with the Cat Dancer and watch your kitty jitterbug.
- Your Catz will have a ball with the yarn.
- Catz dig the bouncy jingle ball.
- Lure the mouse out of its hole with the cheese.
- Use the hair brush to groom your Catz.
- Spoil your Catz with a tasty fish treat.
- Amuse your Catz with the rubber squeaky toy.
- Feed your Kittenz with the milk bottle when they're young.
- Feed your Catz every day with the food bowl.
- Quench your Catz' thirst with some cool, refreshing water.
Double-click to "come here" (Kiss Kiss sound)
If your Catz runs off-screen or you simply want it to "come here," double-click
the mouse button. Your Catz should run to wherever you are (unless it's being
naughty).
Breeds
To see all five breeds of Catz, go to the "Options" menu and select
"Choose Another Kittenz".
You'll now be able to sample any of the five breeds of Catz, and adopt a new
Catz of your choice. New Catz will be saved with their own icons titled
"My Catz," "My Catz 2," etc. You can rename these files yourself to identify
all of your Catz clearly.
POUNCER
Pouncer Catz are ready to hunt anything that moves. They react to every toy and
the cursor as if they were live creatures. Pouncer Catz are keen and agile by
nature. Take out the cheese to lure the mouse to the desktop so that Pouncer
can sharpen its hunting skills.
HOMEBODY
Homebody Catz love your attention. Feeding, petting and a lot of TLC make these
Catz as happy as can be.
SOPHISTO
Sophistos are proper Catz, concerned about appearance and dignity. They hate
being messy and will groom themselves after any activity.
JESTER
Jester Catz are always Kittenz at heart. Easily pleased and excited, they never
mind clowning around and acting silly. Everything is a game for the Jester
Catz.
SCAREDY
Scaredy Catz startle easily. Petting and gentle playing will mellow their mood
a little, but the slightest sound or movement could send them climbing up the
walls. It can be very rewarding once you have gained Scaredy's trust.
Watch Your Catz Grow
It takes about a month for the Kittenz you adopt to grow up into full adult
Catz. (These do not have to be consecutive days. Catz only grow on days that
you play with them.)
Many Different Catz on One Computer
Although your copy of Catz is limited to one computer, you may have
as many Catz as you like on that computer.
- Select "Choose Another Kittenz" from the Options menu to adopt a new Catz.
Your previous Catz will not be erased. Instead, a new Catz will be created.
Individual Catz are represented by separate files. Double-click on a file to
open that Catz.
- File Names: When you create a new Catz, the file that represents it will be
given a default name of "My Catz #." The number increments by one with each
new Catz. You may rename these files to identify your Catz by name.
(e.g., change the name "My Catz 4" to "Frisky").
Coloring Your Catz
You can "paint" your Catz any color you like.
First, select the color you wish to use under the "Options" menu -
"Brush Color".
(This menu can be dragged off and left on the desktop as long as you like).
Click on the color you want, and you will notice that the tip of the
paintbrush shows your choice.
Drag the paintbrush over your Catz so that the colored end of the paint
brush touches the area you wish to paint.
Spray Bottle (Reprimanding your Catz)
If your Catz are disobedient, drag out the Spray bottle and release it near
your Catz to give it a quick spritz. That should make it behave a little better.
Changing your Catz' name
Look in the "Options Menu" under "General Options." You can change your
Catz' name in the section called "Catz' Name."
Sleeping
If you pet your Catz just right, they will usually nod off to sleep.
You may even catch them dreaming!
A nice way to wake up your Catz is to pet them while they're sleeping.
Playing with Catz while working
You can play with your Catz while working on your normal applications.
They will keep you company while you type letters, email, or work on budgets!
Resize your other application's window(s) so there is room for the Catz
Playpen window on your screen.
- It's a good idea to put the food bowl in the visible part of the playpen.
Now your Catz can keep you company while you work!
Remember, you can always let your Catz out of the Playpen if you want
it to play over the full screen, and put it back in when you want to work.
